What Desalinated Water Means for the Environment

Everywhere we look today, companies, homes, and families are “going green.”  There is a big push to save the environment, and that means that every new and old idea is being investigated for its effect on the world which surrounds us.  Desalinated water is no exception, and many groups are concerned on the environmental effects of the entire process.  In a number of ways, the efforts to convert seawater into drinking water are far better for the environment than traditional means, but there are still some concerns to be aware of as well.

The desalinization of seawater produces a waste product known as brine.  Brine is a combination of the salt that has been removed from the water as well as fish eggs, plankton, larvae and other debris.  Spread out, over an area, these things are natural and even helpful to the environment.  The desalinization process, however, gathers all this material up into a concentrated form and reintroducing it into the natural world can seriously upset the balance.  Desalinating water also takes a large amount of energy.  The consumption of this energy can be harmful in the expenditure of other precious resources or in that desalinating plants typically use nuclear power.

Even with these potentially devastating effects of desalinating water, with proper care and planning, desalinated water is far better for our environment.  Fresh water sources are being depleted on a daily basis.  The fresh water tables that most cities draw their drinking water from also help support the natural environment in both the flora and fauna.  If humans use up all that water, the rest of the world suffers.  Further, the chemicals used in most fresh drinking water can be harmful to both the environment and the humans who ingest it.  We do not find these same chemicals in most desalinated water.  By farming seawater to drink, we’re using a resource that is much less scarce and protecting the local limited reserves of fresh water.
