What Desalinated Water Means for the Economy

While there are many concerned with the environmental benefits and costs of popular desalinated water products, another important aspect is the influence desalinated seawater will have on local and even global economies.  There are several factors to consider when investigating the economic effects of any new technology or product.  Desalinated water is no different.  Of course, we will see an influx of new jobs as more people are required to man the desalinization plants, their sales forces, and administrative duties.  Those same jobs very possibly will create less demand for a workforce within the fresh water treatment sector.  But, because there is a greater abundance of seawater to be farmed, it is quite feasible that whatever jobs are lost from one area will be more than made up for in the other.

The byproduct of table salt from the desalinization process will make this resource easier and therefore cheaper to come by.  With the renewed and heightened interest in the marine environment, we will see more marine biologists and related fields graduating and finding work.  The next steps include further undersea mining, and finding new and better ways to produce the desalinated water products.  Overall, from this aspect, we are going to see a good influx to economies around the world as drinking water becomes more readily available.  A new frontier is opening within the seas, which is going to provide us with the scientific breakthroughs that were previously only science fiction.

The dual purpose desalinization plants already in place are only the first steps in a future that will see both the need and the benefit from placing several initiatives next to one another, lowering over all cost to producers, which will then lower the cost to consumers as well.  Already, we have seen the demand for desalinated water increase around the globe.  This requires an increase in marketing, shipping, and all other support services.  The demand continues today, and it continues to increase.  Desalinated seawater is quite possibly the next generation’s version of indoor plumbing.  As the popularity only continues to grow and the base of the industry strengthens, we’re going to see a positive influx to economies locally with jobs and globally and prices decline as a result of desalinated water.
