Anyone who has been through the most basic of survival courses or even grade school science can tell you: drink fresh water, not salt water. As with all things, though, it seems time and technology are even changing this age-old rule. For a handful of years now, companies around the globe have been selling you salt water to drink. It comes in bottles typically, although some trials have been conducted to introduce the abundant supply of seawater right into your home via tap water. Some say you will never know the difference. Some say it is the best water you’ll ever taste.
The desalinated water people are buying on the shelf isn’t that different from the water men and women drink every day from the tap or the bottle. Desalinated water goes through a process to remove the salt from seawater to make it as safe to drink as everyday fresh water. If you think about it, the fresh water we normally drink on a daily basis isn’t that different. Water drawn in from natural wells is put through a series of treatments that remove pollutants, minerals and other substances from the water before we drink it. The seawater is put through a similar process, although proponents say it’s even better because the water is farmed from non-polluted areas, so not as many chemicals need to be added to make desalinated water safe to drink. To those who wonder why a drug such as fluoride which has only been proven to have a calming effect and no other benefit is added to our drinking water normally, this is good news. Less chemicals and additives make safer water.
Desalinated water comes from a variety of places around the globe. Hawaii and Japan are two of the largest producers, which make sense since relatively little fresh water is readily available on the islands, although they are entirely surrounded by seawater. The desalinated water is sold locally and even shipped around the world, becoming a new financial boon to these saltwater farmers. Desalinated water may soon find a more popular home amongst the mainland Americas as it has already began to catch on as more of a luxury. As the process grows in popularity, prices are sure to drop while production increases for desalinated water.
