The Internet was designed back in the 60s. Some college students and tech heads were using FreeNet and similar systems back in the 80s. In the 90s, schools started to get web access for their classes and students, and then teachers. Now, everyone has gone broadband and wireless, and it seems everyone and everything everywhere is online. Technology keeps advance, and society is often slow top grasp the changes that come their way. Once they do take hold that something has changed, though, they are typically a flourish with way to enhance and further distribute it. We can already see this happening with desalinated drinking water.
When you mention to most people at first that drinking seawater is perfectly healthy, you’re liable to get a series of strange looks and possibly laughter. Drinking seawater is perfectly safe, however. Our military submarines and luxurious ocean liners have been serving up desalinated water to their passengers for years. Japan and the Middle East have been using the desalinization techniques to provide fresh water for their people to drink and bathe with for awhile now. And, even the US has jumped into the fray, particularly in Hawaii where seawater is plentiful, but fresh ground water isn’t. Necessity will drive the technology where as demand will help it to grow. Seawater is cleaner and requires less chemicals than standard drinking water. It’s also more plentiful. As a result, people who are concerned about their own health or that of the environment are more likely to enjoy the desalinated drink.
We have seen the sales of stateside seawater desalinization companies jump tremendously and then stabilize. So, we know there is a demand, and it is not something that is only a fad. For both economic and environmental reasons, people continue and will continue to enjoy and prefer the drinking seawater over traditional fresh water.
