The Internet was designed back in the 60s. Some college students and tech heads were using FreeNet and similar systems back in the 80s. In the 90s, schools started to get web access for their classes and students, and then teachers. Now, everyone has gone broadband and wireless, and it seems everyone and everything everywhere is online. Technology keeps advance, and society is often slow top grasp the changes that come their way. Once they do take hold that something has changed, though, they are typically a flourish with way to enhance and further distribute it. Desalinization has been in practice for many years. Submarines and cruise ships have used it for years now, although the extent to which they have needed to utilize desalinization has been relatively limited, and only for their crew.
